Rescue Team gets ‘call-out’ to St. Colmcilles!
As part of Btec Sport our Year 11 pupils are carrying out a module titled ‘Expedition Experience’. As part of that, they not only have to take part in an overnight expedition they have to plan it through from start to finish. That requires them to take into consideration safety considerations. That’s where Mountain Rescue came in!
Our local, Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT), were willing to come in to school and speak with the pupils. Marty shared with them a DVD which looked at a mock up rescue and other information about the team. He also brought along one of the team vehicles, full of kit, flashing lights and sirens!...we may have disturbed on a few classes at this point!
The pupils got hands on experience with the rescue equipment. Many of them were shocked by the amount and weight that had to be carried into each rescue. Cahal Walsh was strapped onto the stretcher and the others had a chance to carry him around.
Our pupils showed great interest and enthusiasm for this service and they definitely learnt more with this experience than talking about it in a classroom. Lets just hope knowledge will be all they need of MMRT and they don’t encounter them whilst on expedition!
